• Telus Lights up 5G in Five Cities

    Telus has joined Bell and Rogers in bringing 5G service to select markets in Canada. From their official release:

    VANCOUVER – TELUS announced that it is rolling out its first wave 5G network in Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, and the Greater Toronto Area, and will continue to expand to an additional 26 markets across Canada throughout the remainder of the year.

    TELUS also announced today it has selected Samsung as a network infrastructure partner, with the goal to provide transformational 5G mobile services for Canadians. TELUS previously announced it is also working with Ericsson and Nokia as partners in building its 5G network.

    Businesses, consumers, and students with 5G network access will experience a network with peak speeds reaching up to a blistering 1.7 Gbps [...]
    5G-enabled devices already available from Telus include the LG V60 ThinQ 5G Dual Screen, the Moto Edge+ and the Samsung Galaxy S20 series. Like Bell and Rogers, 5G on Telus will cost nothing extra until March of 2021; from then on you'll be expected to pony up an additional $15/month for the privilege.

      Excuse the ignorance as i have been out of the game for a long time.
      Can anyone tell me what N bands will Telus use for 5G?
      I bought the Realme X50 and it utilizes 5G NR：n1*/n41/n78/n79.
      Will this work on Telus?

      Same as Bell. It's n66. Pretty much only 3 phones supporting right now... Samsung, LG, Motorola.

      Absolutely! The most important one will be a year from now, which is n78. That will have wide bandwidth (50-100 MHz depending on auction results) and good coverage. n66 is only 10 MHz. About 1 year after n78, Canada will auction mmWave. These deployments could have ultra wide bandwidth (100-800 MHz depending on auction results), but very poor coverage. mmWave deployments will not be nationwide, but rather focused in small areas that need excess capacity. In parallel to all of this, existing 3G and 4G bands will be re-farmed to 5G. This can be done with traditional static re-farming, where the old technology is completely shut down before the new one is deployed, or with newer dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS). Smaller channel sizes like 5 or 10 MHz will not be very practical for DSS, and the technology is not mature yet.

      One last point I would make is to expect 5G and 4G to have similar speeds for equal channel sizes/MIMO. This is because 4G is already extremely efficient and 5G is not able to make much improvements.

      In my opinion, the leap from 3G to 4G was much bigger than 4G to 5G. Having said that, some cool things will come with 5G eventually, once the 5G Core is ready (1-2 years from now). We will see ultra low latency (1 ms) at some point and network slicing.

      Not much for today's mobile phone users. But in the future, other types of customers can request slices for IOT devices, or low-latency applications, or mobile edge computing applications, or augmented reality/virtual reality/real-time gaming. The truth is nobody really knows what the "killer app" equivalent is going to be for 5G, for now they are working on building the infrastructure.

      Here's a speed test since people are wondering. Same as LTE, same as Bell. UL is faster because this was on LG, Bell was on Samsung.

      Just got a samsung s20+ 5g.
      I can get the 5g signal at my house if I'm outside but doesn't appear to be great at this location.

      5G: 49.8Mbit down/4.89Mbit
      LTE and it's 142Mbit down / 9.26Mbit up right now.

      I can get much better upload results on LTE at various times. Blaming the rain tonight.

      I'm sure I could go for a walk and find a much better location for testing. Similar to how LTE was kind of useless at first, this isn't really an improvement on real world things yet.

      Well it's only one or two bands, compared to LTE's like 5 in Canada, so makes sense that you'd get a better speedtest. Looking to pickup a Note 20 (small) or S20 (regular) in the fall myself. 5G hasn't yet tickled my pickle so to speak, e-SIM is more interesting to me.

      I'm surprised the S20 (regular) isn't as 5G capable as its bigger brothers the S20+ and S20 Ultra. Only the latter two support millimetre wave (mmWave) where the real speed benefits of 5G will exist in the coming years.

      None as far as I know. ENCQOR is an Ericsson partnership to get some government funding. There's no real commercial deployment, and no real network. They are targeting IOT device development.

      Not 100% sure, but I believe they only have experimental licenses from ISED to test the technology for a handful of sites in ON and QC.

      Once ISED finishes auctioning mmWave commercially, I doubt ENCQOR will own any of it.

      While IOT sounds great and all that, are there actually any plans in Canada that are of reasonable cost for them? The cheapest data only plan I found (that used to be $10/mo) is now $15 /mo and that's with Lucky mobile. I don't think anyone really wants to pay that to connect an IOT device like a light switch, car GPS or the like. $2-5 is the amount I'm willing to pay.

      So it's the size of the added antennas I believe. I thought they could be printed on a thin film like existing anntens as but I don't think that's the case.

      I'm not sure if it is a service that is offered to retail customers yet. It appears to be mainly offered to enterprise customers at this time.
