• Ericsson Update Causes Rogers Outage

Canada's largest mobile network has, for many, been down for most of the day. Now we finally know why. Here's Jorge Fernandes, Rogers CTO, to explain what happened:

We have identified the root cause of the service issues and pinpointed a recent Ericsson software update that affected a piece of equipment in the central part of our wireless network. That led to intermittent congestion and service impacts for many customers across the country.
When his post was published, Fernandes said it would take "several hours" to get the network back to full service. Hopefully by the time you read this all will be well.

      My iPhone still doesn’t work.
      Is anyone else getting frustrated?
This is ridiculous how long this outage is, especially given how much more we as Canadians pay for wireless.
I know it’s wishful thinking but I hope they offer some compensation

WAY more here than just a simple update gone wrong. Ericsson might have done an update, but rogers ****ed it up . Else - they were compromises.

I'm really curious which core node it was and why it affected 3G and 4G. Any guesses? Is it control plane, user plane, subscriber management, other?

Wi-Fi calling was impacted, so maybe it is subscriber management related, something like HSS/HLR.

I wish I knew too... Registrations on Rogers-EXT also didn't work at the time of the outage. I used my KnowRoaming SIM for the day to register on Bell.

When I first joined Rogers from Telus and before that Virgin, I was surprised at how unreliable the experience was compared to those two. I couldn't register properly for MyRogers right from the get go and when my registration finally did work, the login would often bug out. When actually logged in often information was just plain wrong. Balance of $171.20, yet my last bill was $90 and the carry forward balance was $0... This in addition to MMS not working over WiFi calling and signing up for promotions not really working.

All in all I think this one was coming to Rogers for a while... Internally they just don't have their stuff together the same way Bell / Telus seem to.
