The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is making its way to Canada in the coming weeks and will be launching on Rogers, Bell, and Virgin Mobile. Aside from shipping with BlackBerry 6 and 512MB of added RAM there are only minor changes from the 9700 which was released last year.

Mark October 28th on your calendar as the launch date, but a source tells us the Bell and Virgin might start the party off early with a Oct. 21 launch. Look for the refresh BlackBerry Bold to set you back $150 on a 3 year term with voice and data.

    Thanks BerryReview!

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will be taking the wraps off the company's highly anticipated new mobile operating system at an event in New York on October 11th.

NEW YORK (AFP) – Microsoft unveils a new mobile phone operating system on Monday in what is being seen as a potentially make-or-break effort by the US software giant to remain a player in the hotly competitive niche.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer is to take the wraps off a new line of smartphones powered by Windows Phone 7 (WP7) at an event in New York and the devices are expected to hit stores around the world in the next few weeks.

Though mobile makes up only one percent of Microsoft's revenue, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt said WP7 is a "pivotal release" for the Redmond, Washington-based company.

"This is an 11 on a scale of one to 10," agreed Ramon Llamas of technology reseearch firm IDC. "They've been slow to come to market, and when they do, they use yesterday's technology. There's some catching up to do."

Verizon Wireless plans to cover 110 million people in 38 major metro areas with its LTE network by the end of this year; Verizon president and chief operating officer Lowell McAdam announced today.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Verizon underscored its rapid deployment of the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network today from the CTIA Enterprise & Applications™ 2010 conference. Lowell McAdam, president and chief operating officer of Verizon, detailed the company’s major network launch in 38 major metropolitan areas, covering more than 110 million Americans, by the end of the year. In addition, the company is launching 4G LTE in more than 60 commercial airports coast to coast – both the airports within the launch areas plus airports in other key cities.

McAdam said, “We are driven by the vision to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband connectivity and mobility to rural and urban Americans alike. With our initial 4G LTE launch, we will immediately reach more than one-third of all Americans where they live, right from the start. U.S. Cellular is preparing to make some big changes on October 1st. The Belief Project will give what U.S. Cellular is calling a wake-up call to the wireless world.

There are a number of points here:

U.S. Cellular customers only have to get a 2 year contract ONCE. After the initial term is up they no longer have to sign another contract to receive a discounted price on a new phone.

U.S. Cellular is also reducing the time it takes to receive a discount on a new phone to 18 months.

The waiting time for a new phone discount can be accelerated using Belief Points which are awarded to customers on Belief Plans (in as few as 10 or 11 months). ...

RIM has announced their new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Supports BES and BlackBerry Smartphone syncing.

The tablet supports 1080p high-definition video and has front- and rear-facing high-definition cameras. It also comes with full BlackBerry smart phone applications. Like BlackBerrys, the device comes with the security specifications necessary for enterprise use, Mr. Lazaridis said.

The PlayBook runs on an operating system separate from that of BlackBerry smart phones. Instead, it runs on an operating system, designed by QNX, a company RIM recently bought, which specializes in building such systems for industrial uses. ...

    * More folder with many rich content services relevant to your location. Personalise your Ovi Maps by selecting the services you'd like to keep on your main menu for instant access.

Walmart announced today a branded wireless service that will run on T-Mobile USA's network.

NEW YORK – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Monday that it is introducing the first cell phone plan that uses the chain's own branding, further demonstrating its clout in getting special deals from wireless carriers.

The Wal-Mart Family Mobile service will run on T-Mobile USA's network. Unlimited calling and texting will cost $45 per month for the first line and $25 for each additional line for the family. The service will be offered starting next week in most of its stores across the nation.

Since last year, Wal-Mart has been the exclusive seller of the Straight Talk service, which runs on the Verizon Wireless network. Wal-Mart is also trying out another service from Sprint Nextel Corp. called Common Cents.

Those are both "prepaid" plans, under which customers pay in advance and don't need to sign contracts.

Wal-Mart Family Mobile will be "postpaid" like conventional contract-based plans, so the family bill is paid at the end of the month. But in other ways it works much like prepaid service, and it won't come with a contract requirement or early termination fees. Buyers also won't need to go through credit checks.
