network switching (rainbow SIM) is starting trials

launching first on prepaid Boost Mobile and sometime later on Infinite are what are internally being called 'Rainbow SIM's' that connect to DISH 5G when available and can roam on ATT and T-Mobile network.

i have been told activations are live at select dealer locations in Houston, the exact locations are not being shared.

at least initially no BYOD is allowed and the handset selection is limited to a few Moto's and a new version on the Celero 5G. i do not believe any of the current offering have band 70

This makes sense, with VoNR support being necessary for that SIM on non-hotspot devices. Project Genesis previously shown the same limitations with this SIM (Moto Edge+ and a hotspot device and only in Vegas, so Houston must now have VoNR). BOYD would require VoNR support which is still rare on unbranded unlocked devices, and especially not available on iPhones.

Unless they offered the Moto G Stylis 2022 as part of the selection, you would be correct about the lack of n70 devices in that list. I don’t think n70 is that big of a concern for them right now, rather getting VoNR active in all Dish markets so that voice and data use can be handled by them (so they retain and gain revenue) rather than through a MVNO partner (losing revenue to pay the MNO).

Now, I wonder how they handle IMS/VoLTE in-call outside of Dish's NR network when network switching is needed. There hasn’t been much discussion on that w.r.t. Project Genesis on the Moto Edge+, so hopefully we'll see data points Soon. That is a concern, since most of the time changing the connected network kills an active call immediately. Dish still has lots of dead spots, even when you are close to a Dish tower.

Currently, I wouldn’t want to be using Dish Wireless as my primary daily driver. I still have data lockups and loss of DNS when on Dish (about once a week, even after reporting it through Project Genesis's app and chat). Hopefully Dish isn’t pressuring the dealers that have access to the SIMs to activate them.

network switching (rainbow SIM) is starting trials

On the Dish5G subreddit, someone purchased and activated a Boost Mobile-branded “rainbow SIM” device in New York. From what it seems, the SIM doesn’t do dynamic switching, but rather a more conventional network selection method, with Dish being the priority network, then AT&T, and possibly T-Mobile (the OP couldn’t get the network to connect). Sounds like there might also be issues with T-Mobile IMS or network authorization, but the OP says they plan to do more testing.

God I hope this means BYOD is coming soon. It would be great to have the option to move my Dish line to my iPhone, and/or to activate the $20/month plan in an iPad.

It’s not looking likely before the end of Q2, at least with the rainbow SIM on Boost Mobile and Project Genesis is probably not going to do BOYD before it gets folded into a Boost setup.

There’s reports on the Boost Mobile side that moving the rainbow SIM to another device will get no service, probably due to lack of VoNR on the target device. Dish might have also started enforcing IMEI whitelists for that provisioning, but we need more people attempting it to know for sure. Hotspot SIMs on PG don’t seem to be affected, but that is probably because they are data-only.
