is there a way to send and receive SMS internationally?

I'm looking for a way to send and receive text messages to Honduras. Google Voice works great within the US and Canada, but doesn't allow for international texting. Skype can send but not receive, and even with a Skype number it only works within the US to recieve texts.

I know there's WhatsApp, Signal, Facetime and other messaging apps, but these require data and not everybody I want to communicate with has the app. Some of them have basic talk and text plans with no data.

I have an international SIM card, TravelSim, but it's primarily for voice calls and I haven't figured out how to send SMS to another country.

Any ideas?

Almost every low cost PAYGO provider lets you buy bundles of international minutes pretty cheap.

Some specialise in specific regions / countries.

Besides online research, ask at those little local shops servicing immigrants with money transfers, calling cards and cellphones

Thanks PaulCrawhorne. My current provider Mobi does not offer international voice or text. But I have a PagePlus SIM card that I've never used so maybe I'll activate it on the paygo plan and use that. Good suggestion

Please double check that PagePlus offers what you want. Their paygo and $12/month plans charge .20 per international text. The $29/month or higher includes them, it looks like.

Have a look at Tello, which uses the T-Mobile network. Honduras texts are free. A minimal monthly plan with unlimited texts costs $5/month. For calls, though you have to add paygo funds, and cost ~16c/minute.
