How is Red Pocket now? Should I switch?

I've been with Airvoice for years, but it was bought by another company last year, and it has been nothing but problems ever since. I'm using AT&T phone for AT&T coverage and thinking about switching to Red Pocket, but read a lot of bad reviews about them. Are they true? It used to be a good company, did it go downhill too? Any other good alternatives for a very low user on AT&T network (about $15-$20 per month, I don't need more than 1 GB data per month and not more than 500 talk/text). Thanks!

I don't know how good Boost is, but my nephew (who has to use AT&T) is moving from Red Pocket to Boost next month. They've got an AT&T yearly plan, $100 for unlimited talk and text and a GB of data each month -- comes out to $8.33 a month (don't know about tax and fees). You'll probably have to go to a Boost dealer to get the right SIM (at Walmart and, apparently, online they'll send you the T-Mobile one).

H2O Wireless is on the AT&T network. They have a year plan for $100 (average $8.33 per month) that has 1GB data per month and actually unlimited talk & text (even though you don't need that much.)

I'm more concerned about the reliability of the company and quality of it's customer service than price. Are H20 Wireless or Boost have less complaints than Red Pocket?

Crazy! I read recent reviews on H2O and Boost, both are as bad as Red Pocket. No more decent AT&T MVNOs left?

What about PureTalk, are they any better?

Pure TalkUSA advertises some on the radio, so they at least might have a little more name recognition, but I'm not sure what their pricing looks like.

You might check out FreeUP Mobile. I've had their grandfathered free plan from back when it was available for new signups, and they've kept it for legacy customers. Their current paid plans didn't look too bad the last time I checked, although they probably aren't the absolute cheapest.

I've been on RP since fall 2019, no major issues. Put my dad on it at the same time on the $60 annual plan. Myself, I have 2-4 lines at any given time, 2 GSMA, 1 GSMT, sometimes a special promo. I would recommend. GSMA users had issues with the ATT 3G shutdown (I didn't). Some folks have had recurring issues with being on annual plan but getting cut off monthly (not sure why). I'm not a heavy call/text user, mainly data. ymmv.

Redpocket GSMA was fine for me, having used them for about 4 years. I have a family member on GSMA for the last 8-9 years, using iPhones. I would have stayed with them for my primary line, but when ATT shutdown 3G, my ATT whitelisted phone would not work with Red Pocket GSMA voice any longer (although data worked). I then bought a Google Pixel 7 as my primary phone and switched carriers.

We use Consumer Cellular on AT&T - currently $20/mo plus taxes for 1GB with UNL T&T. Customer service is excellent.

PureTalk bought H2O in 2019. PureTalk has a plan with unlimited talk & text and 4GB for $12.50 per month that should work for you.

How is Red Pocket now? Should I switch?

I had Red Pocket (Verizon) annual plans for backup for a long time and recently let the plan expire because I don’t actually use or need it. No real problems over the years, other than the arrangement of their website made it difficult to find the plan I wanted, rather than the plans they wanted to sell. I have the same complaint about Page Plus, TracFone, US Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon websites. I did start buying annual plans from eBay, which added some complexity to the process but the seller was adequately responsive in my opinion.

Spouse has had RP for a few years. He’s not a cell phone or cell service wizard and just expects them to work. (Funny, because he’s an IT guy and his customers who think like that used to aggravate him, LoL.)
For about a year, his autopay plan would pull a payment then stop his service.
Then okay for a few years.
In the last year or so, when AT&T was transitioning away from 3G he had no service in areas that definitely have service. The best advice was found on Howard Forums, “Call them,” but he let it drag on for a long time before calling. The call resolved the problem.
Last month, his autopay plan pulled a payment and stopped service. He’s agreed to let me help him port to US Mobile if it happens again.

I would not recommend ANY MVNO for people (including my IT guy) who haven’t the resilience and desire to learn how to get and keep the service they want, and likely will want plan changes. If they’re going to buy a standard plan or “pay go” and never deviate, and have someone to help them get started, MVNOs can work for these people. In my opinion, people who plan to use MVNO service should keep informed as to what’s happening and other users’ experiences, problems, and solutions; for me, reading monthly the Howard Forums plus Reddit subreddits works.
I think all MVNOs have good and bad points, as do the Big Three US providers.

    ——- other experiences ——-

My 80s+ years old parents, light users of cell phones, non-tech proficient and didn’t want to be, now cannot become proficient, were paying Verizon $84/month plus $1+/text for two flip phones billed as smartphones because of a little internet capability (never used), for actual use of about 60 talk minutes combined and no texting. It was a huge pain in the neck to close that account, too huge to try to port the numbers (parents didn’t know the account PIN, password, answers to security questions, etc.). I set up new cell service account in my name, on TracFone’s Page Plus service with LG Classic flip phones. Works great (top ups via PinZoo). He recently passed away and if she is still able to use a cell phone when Page Plus service is discontinued by Verizon, my current plan is to move her service (both phones, as she forgets to charge hers) to a “pool” plan on US Mobile, probably pooled with me.

For many years Tracfone was my primary cell service provider and for almost as long Google Voice has provided my main phone number. That works for me because I’m a light user of airtime and cellular internet and am almost always in range of serviceable wifi-delivered internet. And, I don’t need immediate access to calls and messages.
After many years of functioning cell service and very few (mostly good if you ask the question correctly) interactions with customer service, I transitioned away from TracFone a month ago. On top of concerns about my future with Verizon service, they did not properly apply reward points, even after a phone call with that department and the representative saying it’s processing. There’s not enough spare life-time for me to devote to making them do their job, so I thought, “See ya.” (Wanna buy some unlocked lightly used flip phones? Ha, ha.)

My current service is with US Mobile. The port from TracFone was almost seamless, but did require several phone calls, 3-4x with US Mobile advising one thing need to happen and about that many with TracFone saying another thing.
(What I believe occurred was first the USM site wouldn’t record the right information and I needed to contact USM individually for each piece of information [they claimed the problem was on TracFone’s end, and TracFone told me which information that they received from US Mobile was wrong -after I recited the correct information to them-]. Then once the information was correct on Red Pocket’s computers, I needed to re-contact TracFone to release the number. Within minutes of that last call, the number transferred and was active & functional on the US Mobile network.)

That is only for the 1st month. It is $25/mo after that. I think H2O would be fine.

I've been with Red Pocket for over a year, use them for home internet ($100GB/mo on AT&T grandfathered plan).

Not had any major problems. The few minor problems were resolved quickly by emailing them.

If you decide to sign up for a monthly plan with them, (the referral code doesn't work on their annual plans), DM me for a referral code that will save you $25 off your first order.
